Luton vs Manchester United Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, February 15, 2024 1:34 pm

In-form Manchester United make the potentially tricky trip to Luton on Sunday afternoon. This game takes place at Kennilworth Road and kicks off at 4:30pm

Luton Town

Very few Luton fans would have believed that their side would be sat outside of the relegation come mid-February, however, the Hatters have enjoyed a terrific campaign in the top flight and have a realistic chance of survival. At the beginning of the campaign, many fans would have assumed that it would be the club’s home form which would help to keep them afloat, yet their home/away form has been reasonably even. They have been fractionally better on their own patch, winning 25% of their matches here and picking up a point against an exceptional Liverpool side earlier in the campaign.

Rob Edwards’ side have lost two of their last three at Kennilworth and despite going off an odds-on price, they weren’t able to take anything against fellow relegation candidates Sheffield United last weekend. Nevertheless, they were the better side in that game and did create enough chances to have taken at least a point.

Luton aren’t afraid of pouring forward and have notched 15 times across their last six PL matches. The quality of Ross Barkley has been shining through, however, both Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo look reasonably comfortable at this level. Alfie Doughty has also been one of the players of the season and he’s added tremendous energy to the left flank. He’s chipped in with five assists so far and if Luton aren’t able to preserve their top flight status, he is likely to have Premier League interest in the summer.

Luton have lost three of their four home ties with top six sides this season, although each of these defeats have been by a single goal margin.

Manchester United

Manchester United have hit another good patch of form and the pressure has been substantially relieved on Erik Ten Haag. Although crashing out of Europe was a blow, the Dutchman will be pleased that his side don’t have to deal with any fixture congestion throughout February and March.

United are back in the top six and they have plans to overthrow fifth place Aston Villa. United’s goal threat has been ramped up significantly in recent weeks and they’ve now scored 11 times across their last four outings. With 25 goals across their last six fixtures, the Red Devils have been terrific to watch in recent weeks, although Ten Haag would prefer his side to tighten up a little.

Having won six of their last ten matches on the road, United have a terrific record on their travels this season with only four teams having accrued more points away from home.

Rasmus Hojlund has provided United with a focal point in attack and he’s now netted in five consecutive fixtures. With six in his seven and a run of games, he is gaining confidence and looks like a stellar signing. Younger players such as Alejandro Garnacho have also impressed and Luton could struggle to contain them on Sunday afternoon.

United have won five of their six trips to bottom half sides and the good news for Ten Haag is that his side still have several visits to lower-ranked opposition on the horizon.

Head to Head

These two sides were separated by just a single goal when they met at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign. Victor Lindelhof’s second half goal was enough to secure the hosts all three points. That was their first meeting for three years.

The pair met in the EFL Cup back in 2020 with the Red Devils running out 3-0 winners. Very few players from that game remain on United’s books, although Marcus Rashford did find the net in the second half.

Key Betting Stats

  • Man United are yet to be losing at HT in any away game this season
  • Man United are yet to draw a blank when visiting bottom half opposition
  • 45% of United’s goals have been scored after the 70th minute
  • Luton’s home matches have averaged 3.17 goals per game
  • Elijah Adebayo is hoping to get into double figures here. He has nine goals to his name so far.
  • 30% of Luton’s goals have been scored after the 80th minute.

Match Prediction

United look unstoppable on current form, but this could be a tricky assignment for the Red Devils. Luton should be able to find the back of the net in this one and it could be a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes.
