By Ernie Bibby, Friday, February 17, 2023 4:55 pm

Out-of-form Spurs host West Ham on Sunday afternoon. The game takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and kicks off at 4:30pm.

Spurs

Spurs’ incredibly inconsistent campaign continued this week with back-to-back defeats. It’s been a busy week for the North London club, who suffered a disappointing defeat in Milan on Tuesday night.

They were second best against Leicester last weekend and looked defensively susceptible against an average Foxes outfit. Spurs have been particularly inconsistent at home and although their impressive victory over Man City at the beginning of the month has helped to mask some of their deficiencies, they have lost two of their last three at this venue without finding the back of the net.

Spurs have also lost four of their last six at this venue and they will need to improve their performance levels in front of their own fans.

Antonio Conte is under pressure and his side have been uncharacteristically sloppy at the back. Although he’s only suffered eight PL defeats so far, his side have conceded 35 goals in 23 outings and look far from watertight at the back.

On a positive note, Spurs will welcome back Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with the pair having missed the midweek clash.

West Ham

West Ham have endured a disappointing campaign, however, there have been some signs of life recently.

David Moyes’ tactical reshuffle has helped to improve their results, yet they’ve still failed to win 9 of their last 10 outings. Their away form is particularly troubling and they will be desperate to improve upon their record of one victory on the road. The Hammers have scored just seven times on the road, yet they’ve netted three times in their last two and are averaging around 13 shots per game on their travels.

Lucas Pacqueta’s injury is a sizeable blow to the visitors with the Brazilian having produced a number of eye-catching performances recently. Nevertheless, the East London outfit have become much tougher to beat and they’ve suffered just a single loss in their last five outings.

Head to Head

Both of these two sides have traded blows recently with each winning two of the last five meetings. This pair drew 1-1 earlier in the campaign with Tomas Soucek’s second-half strike cancelling out an own goal.

Spurs have won 17 of the last 33 meetings between these sides with West Ham having secured ten victories during that same period.

As hosts, Spurs have a decent record in this fixture. They’ve won three of the last four meetings and have scored 2+ goals in each of those fixtures.

West Ham’s last victory in North London came in April 2019 when Michail Antonio’s solitary second half strike was enough to take all three points.

Key Betting Stats

  • Spurs are yet to draw at home this season. They were victorious in each of their first five home games this season, however, they’ve won just two of their last six at this venue.
  • The hosts have found the net just once across their last three home matches.
  • West Ham have been defeated in 64% of their away games this season.
  • West Ham are yet to score a goal in the first ten minutes of a match so far this season.
  • Spurs matches have averaged 3.35 goals per game so far this season. Only Man City and Leicester have a higher average than the Lilywhites.
  • Harry Kane has netted 17 times so far this season with eight of those strikes coming at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
  • Jarrod Bowen has netted four times so far this season, however, he is yet to notch on the road.

Match Prediction

West Ham have tightened up in recent weeks and they’ve become tougher to beat. Spurs are incredibly inconsistent at home and come off the back of a busy week. The Hammers might be able to take a point from this clash, but it’s unlikely to be a high scoring affair.
