Brighton vs Man United FA Cup Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Friday, April 21, 2023 2:18 am

The second FA Cup semi-final of the weekend gets underway on Sunday afternoon as Man United travel to Wembley to face in-form Brighton. The match takes place at 4:30pm and is live on BBC1.

Brighton

Brighton are one of the best run clubs in the country and the Seagulls are enjoying a hugely successful season in the top flight. Despite the departure of Graham Potter, the Sussex outfit have kicked on and are hugely enjoyable to watch under Roberto di Zerbi.

Although they generally struggle to win back-to-back contests, they have been victorious in four of their last seven matches and can take plenty of confidence into this FA Cup clash. Nevertheless, most of their victories in the PL have come against bottom half sides, although they were victorious at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign.

Brighton have encountered very few issues during their FA Cup progression, although they’ve faced just one fellow Premier League side during that run. Nevertheless, they were excellent against Liverpool at the end of January and have nothing to fear coming into this tie.

Although this isn’t technically an ‘away game’, it’s worth noting that Brighton’s matches on the road are hugely entertaining and contain an average of 3.47 goals per game. They aren’t likely to deviate from that approach here.

Man United

Man United were mightily impressive against Nottingham Forest last weekend as they produced one of their most eye-catching performances of the season. Erik Ten Haag’s side are battling on several fronts and they come off the back of a tricky trip to Seville on Thursday night. United have coped with a quick turnaround in previous weeks, yet they have a number of injury issues and the loss of prolific marksman Marcus Rashford is a significant blow.

Despite their issues on the road, United have been very consistent in this competition and have won each of their four previous games by the same score-line (3-1). Despite this seemingly comfortable passage to the semi-finals, they have fallen behind in each of their last two FA Cup games.

The Red Devils have previously struggled with Brighton, yet the incentive to reach the final and potentially face rivals Manchester City could help to push them through.

Head to Head

Until recently, Man United had enjoyed an excellent record against this opposition, however, the Seagulls have won each of the last two meetings between these sides.

Brighton stuck four past Man United at the end of last season and they were also victorious at Old Trafford at the beginning of this campaign.

Overall, United have won nine of the last 13 meetings, although strangely, not a single one of those games has finished level. 69% of those matches have featured three or more goals.

Key Betting Stats

  • Brighton have conceded just twice in their four FA Cup ties this season
  • Manchester United have scored exactly three goals in each of their four FA Cup victories so far this season
  • Erik Ten Haag’s side are yet to keep a clean sheet in the FA Cup this season
  • Brighton matches have averaged 3.14 goals per game this year
  • Seven of the last eight meetings between these sides have featured three or more goals
  • Marcel Sabitzer has enjoyed competing in cup competitions this season. He scored twice in the Europa League recently and also found the net in the FA Cup against Fulham.
  • Pascal Gross signed a new contract for Brighton this month. He scored both goals when Brighton beat Man United at Old Trafford earlier in the season and also netted against the Red Devils at the end of last season.

Match Prediction

This could be a very entertaining contest and there should be plenty of action at both ends. Brighton’s attacking threat is substantial, yet they aren’t always watertight at the back. This is a quick turnaround for United and facing one of the best footballing sides in the division at Wembley will be far from straightforward.
