Newcastle vs Manchester United Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Saturday, April 1, 2023 5:58 am

Sunday’s final Premier League fixture takes place at St. James’ Park as Newcastle host Manchester United in a repeat of the EFL Cup final. The match gets underway at 4:30pm.

Newcastle

Newcastle’s 2023 form has been largely disappointing. Nevertheless, Eddie Howe’s men went into the international break off the back of consecutive victories and can bring plenty of confidence into this weekend’s fixture.

Despite their recent struggles, the Magpies still sit fifth in the PL table and are firmly on course to return to Europe. Their home form has been extremely impressive and they’ve suffered just a single defeat in front of their own fans (vs Liverpool).

Injuries have hampered their progress, however there are a number of players who look likely to return over the next couple of weeks. Anthony Gordon should be back in contention whereas Joelinton returns from suspension. Miguel Almiron is the only major absentee for the hosts.

Eddie Howe’s men will be aiming to exact revenge for their EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United at Wembley. They’ve also failed to find the net in each of their last two matches against the Red Devils.

Manchester United

Manchester United went into the international break having beaten Fulham in the FA Cup. Nevertheless, the Red Devils have failed to score in back-to-back Premier League fixtures and memories of their 7-0 hammering against Liverpool have still not been fully flushed away.

Erik Ten Haag will be looking to improve his side’s away form with United having failed to win three of their last four on the road. They’ve also picked up just three away victories since the beginning of October.

This is a must-win game for the visitors if they wish to preserve third position. Spurs are just a point behind whereas this weekend’s opponents could draw level with them if they were to take all three points here.

Christian Eriksen is around 10 days away from a return and this match is likely to come too soon for the Dane whereas Marcus Rashford has picked up an injury and is unlikely to be risked.

Head to Head

Manchester United have a superior record in this fixture and have won 18 of the last 29 meetings between these sides (62%). October 2019 was the last time that Newcastle recorded a victory in this fixture.

The hosts have won just two of the last nine matches between these sides at St. James’ Park with both of those games ending 1-0.

This isn’t traditionally a high-scoring fixture with just 43% of their meetings featuring three or more goals. Only one of the last five has landed Over 2.5 Goals.

Key Betting Stats

  • Only Manchester United (8) have conceded fewer home goals than Newcastle (9)
  • Newcastle have kept clean sheets in 54% of their home matches, the joint-highest alongside Brighton, Liverpool and Man United.
  • Newcastle matches have averaged just 2.23 goals per game this season. Only three sides have a lower average (Everton, Palace and Chelsea)
  • Newcastle have conceded the fewest second half goals (11) in the Premier League
  • Man United have conceded 27 away goals this season. Only three sides have shipped more.
  • Scott McTominay has yet to find the net in the Premier League, however, he scored four times in 180 minutes for Scotland during the international break.
  • Alexander Isak has scored just six times for Newcastle so far this season, yet he’s netted 50% of those in his last two outings.

Match Prediction

Newcastle are incredibly tough to beat this season and won’t make it easy for Manchester United. They will fancy seeking revenge and with home advantage, they should be able to take at least a point from this tie. United’s away form is far from rock-solid and they may have to settle for a point.
