Liverpool vs Aston Villa Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Friday, May 19, 2023 5:54 am

Liverpool’s top three ambitions could be given a significant step boost on Saturday afternoon if they can see off Aston Villa at Anfield. The match kicks off at 3pm.

Liverpool

It hasn’t been a vintage campaign for Liverpool, however, they are ending the season strongly and they come into this game just a point behind third place Newcastle. With Manchester United also firmly in the mix, the Reds have a tough task ahead of them, and this will be far from an easy assignment.

The Merseyside club were ruthless against struggling Leicester on Monday night, however, high-flying Villa are unlikely to be quite so accommodating at the back.

At home, Liverpool have lost just a single game so far this season (vs Leeds on October 29th) and they have also kept back-to-back clean sheets at this venue too. Only Manchester City have a better home record than the Reds and they’ve also proved fairly adept when hosting top half sides. They’ve dropped just six points when welcoming sides in the top ten and have already beaten Man City, Newcastle and Man United at this ground.

With a number of senior pros set to leave at the end of season, Jurgen Klopp may opt to give some minutes to those departing players. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see James Milner and Roberto Firmino featuring here in some capacity.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been one of the surprise packages of the season. They began the season poorly, however, the appointment of Unai Emery has given them a new lease of life and until recently, they were firmly in contention for the top four.

Villa suffered consecutive away defeats which has seen them fall away from the race for the top four, yet considering they were victorious in just two of their first 11 matches this season, fans should be more then satisfied with a top half finish.

The Villains away form has been fairly strong overall this season, although they are now winless in three on their travels. They were easily swept aside in each of their visits to the current top four, however, they did do the double over Spurs and were also victorious at the AMEX earlier in the campaign.

Head to Head

These two sides met on Boxing Day with Liverpool triumphing 3-1 at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s men bounced back from this setback by embarking upon an unbeaten run which stretched all the way until the beginning of February.

Liverpool have got an excellent record against this opposition and have won each of the last five meetings. They’ve scored 12 times during that sequence with Villa only failing to score once.

Villa have won just seven of the last 28 meetings between these sides with their most memorable victory coming in October 2020 when they ran out 7-2 winners.

Key Betting Stats

  • Despite their good form on the road, Villa have averaged just 0.94 goals per game away from home.
  • 50% of Villa’s away victories have come against sides battling relegation in the bottom four.
  • Only four sides have conceded fewer away goals than Aston Villa this season (24)
  • 62% of Villa’s goals this season have either come in the first 20 minutes or last 20 minutes of matches.
  • 10 of Villa’s 18 away games have been level at the break
  • Liverpool have conceded just 16 home goals this season. Only Manchester United and Newcastle have conceded fewer on their own patch.
  • 33% of Liverpool’s home games have ended either 1-0 or 2-0.

Match Prediction

Liverpool are an exceptionally strong home team and they should be able to sign off the season at Anfield with a victory. Aston Villa have struggled recently on the road and it’s difficult to see them building on their success over Spurs. They’re without a victory on the road in three and this is a tough assignment for Unai Emery.
