Champions League Final – Man City vs Inter Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, June 8, 2023 7:58 pm

The European football season officially concludes on Saturday evening as Man City take on Inter in the Champions League final. The game kicks off at 8pm and will take place at Turkey’s Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium.

Manchester City

It’s been yet another record-breaking season for Man City who remain on course to replicate their rivals Man United and potentially complete the treble this weekend. Having wrapped up the Premier League title and having overcome the aforementioned Red Devils last weekend at Wembley, attention now turns to Istanbul.

Pep’s side are understandably odds-on favourites for this weekend’s showpiece event and having already ousted both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich from the competition, they have very little to fear coming into this tie.

Across their six knock-out games, City have conceded just three times, although notably, all of those goals came on the road. They also failed to win any of their three away knock-out matches (drawing them all 1-1).

Pep played his strongest XI against Man United last weekend and he is likely to opt for a similar line-up here. Phil Foden may have to settle for a place on the bench, and although Jack Grealish wasn’t at his best last weekend, he may be preferred on the left.

It’s the second time that Man City have reached this stage of the competition and they will hoping to banish the demons of 2020-21 when they were defeated 1-0 by fellow PL outfit Chelsea.

Inter

Inter are potentially regarded as surprise finalist, however, the Serie A club deserve their place in this showpiece event. Admittedly, they’ve benefitted from a much easier passage to the final, however, keeping clean sheets against Porto, Benfica and their rivals AC Milan is far from an easy feat.

Domestically, Inter will have been potentially disappointed with their third place finish, yet they finished the season strongly, winning seven of their last eight matches. Only Champions Napoli have got the better of them since mid-April.

Inter shouldn’t be underestimated and they are looking for their fourth success in this competition. They’ve suffered just a single UCL defeat away from the San Siro this season and have managed to keep some decent opposition off the scoresheet. They will look to keep things tight in Turkey.

Romelu Lukaku is a familiar name to UK football fans and Man City must be wary of the big striker’s presence. He has shaken off his injury problems and has rediscovered his form at a crucial stage of the season. He’s scored in four of his last five outings, although it was Lautaro Martinez who netted the crucial goals in Inter’s Coppa Italia victory over Fiorentina a fortnight ago.

Head to Head

Despite both featuring in this competition regularly over the last decade, these two sides have never previously met in a competitive fixture.

They last met in in 2011 in a club friendly ahead of the forthcoming domestic season with City winning convincingly.

Key Betting Stats

  • Each of the last four Champions League finals have featured either one or two goals. Each of the last three have finished 1-0.
  • 10 of City’s last 16 Champions League goals have been come after the break.
  • Only Benfica have scored more UCL goals than Manchester City this season, although the Portuguese outfit have played two more games than Pep’s men.
  • City have lost just a single competitive game since early February. That loss came against Brentford with the title having already been wrapped up.
  • Inter have kept clean sheets in four of their last five UCL matches
  • Three of Inter’s last five UCL matches have been goalless at half time.
  • Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal in Inter’s second leg victory over AC Milan. His three UCL goal have come against Barcelona, Benfica and AC Milan. He also scored both goals in the Coppa Italia final.
  • Erling Haaland is the competition’s top goalscorer this season. He’s found the net on 12 occasions.

Match Prediction

It’s hard to look beyond Man City, although Inter can be fairly stubborn opposition and they won’t make it easy for the Premier League champions. The Italian side can be exceptionally well-organised and City may have to be patient.
