Scottish Cup Final – Celtic vs Inverness Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, June 1, 2023 6:27 pm

The Scottish football season culminates this weekend as Celtic face Inverness in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park. The game kicks off at 5pm.

Ange Postecoglu has done a sensational job at Celtic Park and as a result, the Australian has been linked with vacant managerial positions, most notably at Spurs. These rumours are unlikely to help the club maintain their focus on this weekend’s Scottish Cup final.

Postecoglu looks set to deliver another record-breaking treble, although his side mustn’t take their eye off the ball this weekend.

Having secured the title, Celtic failed to win three of their last four SPL matches, yet they should be fully motivated for this showpiece event.

The Hoops haven’t had the easiest of passages to this stage and were required to beat their arch rivals Rangers at the semi-final stage. Prior to that contest, they eased past Hearts, St. Mirren and Greenock Morton. They conceded just a single goal en-route to this season.

Having crashed out of the competition to Rangers in two consecutive seasons, Celtic will be determined to go all the way this time around.

By their own standards, it’s been a disappointing campaign for Inverness, however, their season could end in remarkable style if they can spring a surprise at Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon.

The second tier outfit were only able to finish sixth in the table and rarely looked like challenging for promotion. They produced a terrific run for form throughout April, winning their first six matches of the month, however, that form began to tail off towards the end of the season.

Nevertheless, they’ve put together a fabulous run of form in the Scottish Cup and have seen off Queens Park, Livingston, Kilmarnock and Falkirk en-route to this stage. Having already seen off two SPL sides in this competition, they will enter this tie with a quiet confidence.

Boss Billy Dodds has described the game as about ‘miracles and fairytales’ and described the mood in the camp as ‘very good’. Having been successful in this competition as recently as 2015, Dodds will be hoping that his side can cause a monumental upset in this one-off game.

Head to Head

Inverness have spent the last few seasons in the second tier and a result, these two sides haven’t met since 2017. Celtic have won four of the last five meetings the Caledonian outfit and have also kept clean sheets in three of those four.

Inverness managed to secure a 2-2 draw when the two sides met in September 2016.

Key Betting Stats

  • Inverness have scored exactly three goal in four of their last five matches in this competition.
  • Former Oldham and Wigan striker Billy McKay has found the net in each of the last three rounds of the Scottish Cup and netted twice in their semi-final victory over Falkirk.
  • A third of Inverness’ matches this season have featured a penalty (22% at home, 44% away)
  • Celtic haven’t played out a goalless draw this season and 97% of their matches have featured at least two goals.
  • Ange Postecoglu’s side have netted 14 times across their four matches in this competition.
  • Celtic have won this competition on 40 occasions. However, they haven’t featured in the final since 2020.
  • Five of the last eight Scottish Cup Finals have featured at least three goals
  • Celtic haven’t conceded a first half goal in this competition. They also managed a clean sheet in the first half of four of their last six SPL matches.

Match Prediction

Celtic will be expected to cruise to victory in this one and they should be able to clinch the treble despite Postecoglu being linked with a move away. Inverness have been on a remarkable run in this competition and they should play their part in a hugely entertaining clash, however, they are likely to fall short.
