New York Red Bulls vs New England Revolution

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, July 6, 2023 5:38 am

The inconsistent New York Red Bulls will be hoping to climb the Eastern Conference standings and give themselves a fighting chance of reaching the play-offs when they take on the high-flying New England Revolution. The game kicks off at 12:30am UK time on Sunday morning.

New York Red Bulls

The Red Bulls slumped to another disappointing defeat last weekend as they fell at the hands of the Columbus Crew in Ohio. Despite the loss, coach Troy Lesesne suggested that his side controlled the game well and deserved something from the contest.

It’s the latest in a long line of disappointing results with the Harrison outfit having failed to string back-to-back wins together this season so far. Despite their issues, they have looked far better at the Red Bull Arena in recent months and have suffered just a single defeat in front of their own fans since the beginning of May.

The Red Bulls have been creating plenty of chances in their matches and throughout the majority of the season, they’ve been towards the top of the table when it comes to xG numbers. They’ve tended to outshoot their opponents in the majority of their matches and have been incredibly wasteful in the final third. Last weekend, Elias Manoel, who had already scored in the game, was guilty of missing a penalty which would have rescued a point for the struggling franchise.

Goalscoring has become an issue throughout the season with none of their current squad having netted more than twice so far. Nevertheless, the aforementioned Elias Manoel has now scored in back-to-back games whereas Franuel Amaya notched a brace against Atalanta a fortnight ago. NYRB may just be finding their feet in the final third.

New England Revolution

Things are looking a lot rosier for the visitors. They are unbeaten in their last seven matches and have suffered just three defeats all season. They are challenging at the top of the Eastern Conference and come into this game just seven points off FC Cincinnati, who currently occupy top spot.

Although they did drop points last weekend, the Revs became the first team to take a point home from the TQL Stadium as they drew 2-2 with the excellent FC Cincinatti. Although this is a second consecutive road trip, this contest should be significantly easier for the visitors.

New England Revolution matches have also been fairly entertaining affairs too. 55% of their matches this season have finished with either three or four goals in them and they’ve managed just three away clean sheets all season.

Bruce Arena admitted that his players struggled with the heat in the second half against Cinci and the experienced coach will have been glad that his side didn’t have a midweek assignment. They’ve added Ian Harkes to their squad this week with the former Dundee United man following in his father’s footsteps. Although he is unlikely to play any part this weekend, his presence will certainly help to bolster the numbers.

Head to Head

There have been plenty of meetings between these two sides and generally speaking, there tend to be goals whenever these two sides have faced one another. New York Red Bulls have won each of the last two meetings between these teams and were victorious here in September (2-1 victory).

Prior to the back-to-back victories, New England Revolution had tended to dominate the fixture and had won five of the last eight.

There have been 18 goals across the last five meetings between these sides.

Key Betting Stats

  • Only four sides have averaged higher scoring matches than the Revs this season (3 goals per game on average)
  • New England Revolution have conceded at least two goals in 50% of their away matches this season
  • The Revs are hard to beat. They’ve drawn each of their last three away matches.
  • 44% of the goals that New England Revolution have conceded have come in the final 20 minutes of games.
  • There have been three or more goals in 50% of NYRB’s home matches so far this season – compared to just 10% on the road.
  • There have been 14 goals across NYRB’s last four matches. Their games this season have averaged just 1.9 goals per match.

Match Prediction

New England Revolution are enjoying a tremendous season, however, they have been struggling to turn draws into wins on the road. The hosts are improving and they’ve been much better at home recently. They’re still fairly hard to trust, so it might be best to back a few goals in this weekend’s encounter.
