West Ham vs Chelsea Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, August 17, 2023 1:15 pm

Sunday’s late game is an all-London clash as West Ham host big-spending Chelsea at the London Stadium. David Moyes will be hoping to build on his side’s opening day 1-1 at Bournemouth. This game gets underway at 4:30pm UK time.

West Ham

It’s been a frustrating summer for West Ham and their fans as they’ve witnessed numerous transfer targets come and go. They have added James Ward-Prowse from Southampton and Edson Alvarez from Ajax, however, it’s been fairly slow when it comes to the incomings. Mohammed Kudus has been linked this week, however, the squad needs bolstering ahead of a potentially exhausting campaign which will, once again, involve Thursday night football.

The Hammers started the season a decent 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. It was an entertaining affair with both sides creating plenty of chances. David Moyes will have been relatively pleased with his side’s display and with the addition of JWP, set-piece routines could be their best route to goal.

West Ham’s home form last season was fairly average with the majority of their victories here coming against bottom eight sides. They beat Fulham and Manchester United here, although they failed to get the better of any other side in the top 13 at this venue.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s XI is unrecognisable from this time last season with the Blues having undergone an extensive on-field restructuring. Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure began with a respectable 1-1 draw against Liverpool and they will see this game as winnable. It was a fairly open contest and they created plenty of chances throughout the 90 minutes.

Moises Caicedo’s protracted transfer was completed this week and the Ecuadorian could make his debut this weekend. Reece James is also likely to return to the fold having been taken off last weekend. The right-back is being eased back into action following an injury lay-off and should be able to contribute. Christopher Nkunku is a long-term absentee.

This Chelsea XI is still getting to know one another, although a number of newcomers including striker Nicholas Jackson looked lively last week at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues endured a terribly frustrating and inconsistent campaign last season and they will be keen to draw a line under that period. Overall, they’ve won just one of their last 13 matches and they must turn the tide quickly.

Head to Head

There wasn’t much between these two sides when they met last season. The last meeting at the London Stadium ended 1-1 whereas Chelsea were victorious at Stamford Bridge (2-1).

Each of the last five matches have either finished all-square or have been decided by a single goal margin.

Chelsea have won just one of their last five visits to this stadium. That victory came in front of an empty stadium back in 2021.

Key Betting Stats

  • David Moyes has won just seven of his 46 meetings with Chelsea
  • Chelsea have kept just a single clean sheet on the road since October 19th 2022 (vs Liverpool)
  • The last five meetings between Moyes and Pochettino have averaged just 0.8 goals per game.
  • The Blues scored an average of just 0.95 goals per game on the road last season.
  • 37% of West Ham’s matches last season ended with exactly two goals
  • Jarrod Bowen claimed five assists and scored six goals last season

Match Prediction

Matches between these two sides have typically been tight and there is unlikely to be much between them once again. Chelsea are still finding their feet under the new management and with a much-changed squad and may not be ready to start picking up victories just yet. West Ham won’t make it easy and should be better with one or two new additions in the XI.
