Brighton vs Newcastle Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Saturday, September 9, 2023 11:54 pm

Both of these two sides were expected to challenge for the top four this season, however, each of these teams will be looking to bounce back from setbacks last weekend. This game kicks off at 5:30pm UK time and will take place at the AMEX Stadium.

Brighton

Brighton suffered a shock defeat to West Ham last weekend. The Seagulls commanded 79% of the possession and created an array of chances, but they were unable to stop David Moyes’ side from netting on the break (3x). Despite Pascal Gross’ consolation goal, Roberto di Zerbi will be keen for his side to improve their finishing as well as cutting out the silly mistakes at the back.

It wasn’t a bad performance from the Sussex outfit, however, having netted four times in their opening to matches, the expectations, particularly at home, have increased substantially.

They’ll be pleased to have yet another home game in order to put last week’s result firmly behind them, however, the fact that Newcastle are the visitors, makes this game a slightly tougher proposition.

The defeat highlights the recruitment which needs to be completed before the end of the week and with the sales of McAllister and Caicedo and the recent injury to Julio Enciso, Brighton’s midfield does look a little short and they could struggle to exert their dominance on this encounter.

Brighton have been pretty efficient at home in recent seasons and won seven of their first ten games here in 2023. They suffered just a single defeat here when hosting top five sides last year.

Newcastle

Newcastle have been dealt a tough fixture list to start the season. Having seen off top seven challengers Aston Villa with ease, they travelled to the champions Manchester City (lost 1-0) before hosting their bogey team Liverpool last weekend at St. James’ Park. Although this is expected to be slightly easier, Eddie Howe’s side will surely be looking forward to taking on bottom half opposition at some stage this season.

Nevertheless, the Magpies have lost two of their three opening games and will be keen to avoid a third successive defeat.

Despite their lofty expectations this season, Sunday’s result was a bit of a reality check for the North East side. Having led by a single goal and having had a man advantage for the majority of the contest, they should have been able to shut up shop. Eddie Howe’s inability to beat Jurgen Klopp (11 attempts) continues, and the former Bournemouth boss will be hoping that he has better luck taking on Di Zerbi on Saturday teatime.

Their form on the road was a little inconsistent last season and although they did win eight times, five of those victories came against sides who finished comfortably inside the bottom half.

Head to Head

Newcastle have enjoyed the monopoly in this fixture recently and they won in their most recent meeting. For what it’s worth, they were also victorious in pre-season.

The last two fixtures between these sides at the AMEX both ended all-square (1-1 and 0-0), however, the way that both of these sides approach games, this is unlikely to be a dull low-scoring affair.

Despite their recent results against Brighton, Newcastle haven’t actually won at this venue since 2017 when these two sides met in the second tier.

Overall, Newcastle have won just two of their last 12 visits here.

Key Betting Stats

  • Across their opening three PL encounter, Brighton have averaged 18 shots per match.
  • Brighton have shared the goals around this season, although Solly March has already found the netted three times.
  • 33% of Brighton’s goals this season have been scored in the final ten minutes.
  • Despite last weekend’s loss, Brighton have scored more goals than any other PL side (9)
  • There have been at last four cads in each of Brighton’s and Newcastle’s matches so far.
  • Newcastle failed to win any of the visits to fellow top seven sides last season.

Match Prediction

Newcastle will be looking to take advantage of Brighton’s sparse midfield and they do have a far better squad in terms of overall balance. However, Brighton have had the advantage over their opponents in recent seasons and they tend to fare well when hosting the Magpies.
