Burnley vs Manchester United Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, September 21, 2023 1:27 pm

Manchester United are a club in crisis and are rarely far from the headlines. They desperately need to pick up maximum points and make the short journey back to Old Trafford with a victory. This game kicks off at 8pm UK time and will take place at Turf Moor.

Burnley

Burnley picked up their first point of the season at the City Ground on Monday night. The Clarets have made a disappointing start, however, they’ve played one fewer game than the majority of PL sides and have already faced leaders Manchester City, high-flying Spurs and the impressive Aston Villa.

Burnley put in a decent display and had a winning goal chalked off by VAR. It was an encouraging performance at a notoriously tricky venue and it gives Vincent Kompany something to build upon. The Clarets will be without Lyle Foster for this contest with the 23-year old having picked up a straight red card on Monday night. Having provided an assist prior to his dismissal, his presence will be missed at Turf Moor on Saturday evening.

With the exception of their opening weekend loss to Manchester City, Burnley have been competitive in each of their games so far this season, although there are questions over whether they’ll score enough goals this season to avoid relegation. Zeki Amdouni is off the mark and has looked sharp, however, none of their players have averaged more than two shots per game apart from Jay Rodriguez this season. He’s played just nine minutes.

Manchester United

It’s difficult to know where to start with Manchester United?! There are plenty of off-field issues to be resolved and they have threatened to overshadow everything that’s happening on the pitch.

United made a decent game of it on Wednesday night as they slipped to a 4-3 defeat at the Allianz. Ten Haag’s men made numerous mistakes at the back and were sloppy at the back and having also shipped three last weekend, they need to sharpen up quickly. Erik Ten Haag did an excellent job last season of dampening down all of the drama, however, his position is likely to come under scrutiny if they drop yet more points in this contest.

United’s performances have been less than convincing so far and although they’ve played a game more, they’ve faced the same number of shots on target as Saturday’s opponents (29). Andre Onana’s carelessness with his distribution was highlighted at the weekend, however, as a defensive unit, they’ve been hapless and Burnley will fancy their chances of finding a way through.

At the other end of the field, they’ve looked a little more effective and have scored in all but one of their matches. They’re two previous away trips have both been to North London and they should find this a little easier.

Head to Head

These two sides actually met in last season’s EFL Cup with United running out 2-0 winners. United had also won three of their four previous meetings in the top flight, although Burnley did take a point off the Red Devils in their most recent meeting at this venue.

Fans will be hoping for an entertaining game and recent form would suggest that goals should be on the agenda, however, the head-to-heads don’t back that up. Each of the last eight fixtures at this ground between these two sides have had fewer than three goals.

Key Betting Stats

  • Manchester United’s last three PL matches have contained 13 goals. If you add in the UCL game, their last four matches have contained an average of five goals per game.
  • Only Luton have managed few shots on target than Burnley so far this season, although the Clarets have played a game fewer than most teams in the top flight.
  • There have been 14 goals across Burnley’s first three home matches
  • Marcus Rashford has averaged 4.6 shots per game so far this season
  • There have been 14 cards across Burnley’s last two PL matches
  • Burnley have picked up more cards than their opponents in every single one of their PL matches so far.

Match Prediction

Ordinarily, I’d be looking at any opportunity to oppose United, especially coming off the back of a tough trip to Bavaria. However, i’ve not seen enough from Burnley to back the Clarets. Games between these teams are often cagey, but this will surely buck the trend.
