Manchester United vs Manchester City

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, October 26, 2023 11:43 am

The most-anticipated Premier League fixture of the weekend sees Manchester City make the short hop to Old Trafford to face rivals Manchester United. This game begins at 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United

Despite their much-highlighted issues this season, Manchester United remain eighth in the table and have won three of their last four PL matches. Erik Ten Haag’s men were also victorious in midweek at Old Trafford against FC Copenhagen and they will come into this game full of confidence. Nevertheless, there are still issues behind the scenes and rumours of a return for David de Gea suggest that it isn’t a completely happy camp.

The Red Devils have only won one of their last three matches at this venue and the home fans haven’t witnessed a first-half goal here since Auguist 26th.

United’s start may have been masked by their fixture list. They have faced just three top-half sides so far this season and are yet to beat any team who are situated above 12th in the table. They also haven’t beaten any side by more than a one goal margin so far.

One positive is that Casemiro looks set to return to the fold this weekend having been suspended in midweek and having missed last week’s victory over Sheffield United through injury. Ten Haag is still unable to call upon Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo and Lisandro Martinez. Jadon Sancho, who is reportedly banned from eating with the players at the club canteen is unlikely to included in the Dutchman’s plans.

Manchester City

City bounced back from their two-match winless run by beating Brighton 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Pep’s side were also in UCL action on Wednesday night and although they had to be patient against Young Boys, they eventually got the job done. Guardiola made several changes for that match in a bid to keep his squad fresh for this key game on Sunday afternoon. 18-year old Rico Lewis got some much-needed minutes and looked impressive in an inverted role.

The visitors have lost each of their last two PL away games and they will be keen to avoid an unprecedented third away day blip.

Their away fixture list has also been relatively kind having visited two of the bottom three. However, they also went to the London Stadium and ran out 3-1 winners. City are still averaging 15 shots per game and even in defeat, they have been creating plenty of chances.

Erling Haaland ended his UCL drought in midweek and will be keen to add to his four away goals so far this season. City also look far more assured with Rodri back in the side and the midfielder adds some much-needed balance to the XI.

Head to Head

Although City have dominated the recent head-to-head, it was Manchester United who ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford last season. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scored quick-fire goals to cancel out Jack Grealish’s opener. Both matches last season were hugely entertaining with City’s 6-3 victory at the Etihad being one of the most memorable PL games of last season.

City beat their rivals 2-1 in last season’s FA Cup and United will be keen to avenge that harrowing defeat.

Despite being victorious here last season, United have only won twice here in this fixture since 2017.

Bruno Fernandes has found the net in each of his last two games against City.
