Chelsea vs Manchester City Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, November 9, 2023 11:36 am

The Premier League weekend concludes with a fascinating tussle at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea welcome Manchester City to West London. This game kicks off at 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino picked up a must-needed victory on Monday night against his former club Spurs. Despite the result, there are still plenty of questions about the Blues and this will be the ultimate test for the West London outfit.

Although they were helped by Spurs’ indiscipline, Chelsea were picked apart twice by Spurs in the opening few minutes (one was ruled out by VAR) and that is a huge concern for Blues’ fans. At the other end of the field, Nicholas Jackson will surely take some confidence from his Monday night hat-trick and will be keen to add to his tally. The striker still looks a little short of the requisite quality, however, his pace is likely to cause problems for most opposition sides.

Chelsea’s away form has been significantly better than their form at the Bridge and they have picked up just a single home win so far this season. If they recreate their disappointing display against Brentford, they are likely to be picked off by the champions on Sunday afternoon. Their problems have largely been going forward, having drawn three blanks in four home games.

Pochettino is likely to name a similar XI to Monday night, although Marc Cucarella could start having impressed in the second half. Christopher Nkunku is likely to return on the other side of the international break with this game likely to come too soon for the hosts.

Manchester City

City were ruthless against Bournemouth last weekend as they smashed six past the relegation-threatened Cherries. Pep’s men didn’t need to get out of second gear against Young Boys in midweek and they come into this contest in tip-top shape.

The champions have now put their two-game losing streak firmly behind them and they have netted 11 times across their last three PL outings. They have an excellent record at this stadium and have dealt fairly easily with the Blues in recent seasons.

Chelsea’s Monday night victory enabled City to remain top of the table heading into the weekend, however, with the four sides directly below them having all played by the time this game kicks off, they could start this game as low as third place.

City aren’t exempt from injuries with John Stones’ absence being keenly felt by the visitors. He will miss out here alongside long-time absentees Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Gomez. Manuel Akanji is suffering from an ongoing issue and may have to sit this one out.

Although City have lost twice on the road already, they were fantastic at Old Trafford and they should be able to see off yet another underperforming Premier League side.

Head to Head

Chelsea beat Manchester City in the 2021 Champions League final, however, City have subsequently exacted their revenge over the Blues.

These sides met four times last weekend, twice in the PL, once in the EFL Cup and once in the FA Cup. City came out on top on all four occasions with Chelsea failing to score against Pep’s outfit. City have won four of the last six meetings by the same scoreline (1-0).

Chelsea’s last victory in this fixture came during the COVID season when the Blues ran out 2-1 winners in front of an empty Etihad Stadium.

Key Betting Stats

  • Manchester City have been leading at half time in each of their last three matches
  • City have averaged two goals per game on the road this season despite clocking up an xG of 2.34.
  • There have been 9+ corners in five of the last six Chelsea games
  • Nicholas Jackson is averaging three shots per game at Stamford Bridge. He’s found the net just once in front of the home fans
  • Rodri is averging four shots per game on the road.
  • Chelsea and Manchester City have conceded just seven first half goals between them so far this season.

Match Prediction

Chelsea’s home form remains a concern. The Blues were far from perfect on Monday night and this could be a tough 90 minutes. City should be able to pick up all three points, although it might not be straightforward.
