Liverpool vs Arsenal Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, December 21, 2023 11:29 am

It’s 1st vs 2nd in the Premier League this weekend as Arsenal make the trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool. This game kicks off at 5:30pm UK time.

Liverpool

Liverpool failed to score at Anfield for the first time this season last weekend. Despite having the better chances, the Reds couldn’t find a way past Erik Ten Haag’s men and had to settle for a point. The Reds bounced back with an impressive 5-1 victory over West Ham in the Carabao Cup and they have progressed to the semi-final stage of the competition. Although he made some changes to his XI, Jurgen Klopp still opted for a relatively strong line-up and their midweek win should give them plenty of momentum coming into this fixture.

Curtis Jones’ eye-catching performance has put the midfielder into contention for this game and with several fringe players having made a positive impression, Jurgen Klopp has some major decisions to make here. The hosts are still missing Alexis McAllister, Ryan Gravenberch and Thiago Alacantra whereas Ben Doak and Joel Matip are long-term absentees.

This will be a tough match for the Reds, however, they have been exceptionally strong at home across the last few seasons. They are yet to host Manchester City or Spurs here, however, they dismantled Aston Villa and as we’ve already mentioned, they should have seen off Manchester United last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp has criticised the ‘quiet’ atmosphere around this ground recently and he will be hoping that his comments spark an improvement this weekend.

Arsenal

Arsenal will be hoping to retain top spot for Christmas and they head into this game with a point advantage over the Reds. Mikel Arteta’s side were good value for their 2-0 victory over Brighton and created a number of decent chances. The North Londoners are the first side to keep the impressive Seagulls off the scoresheet this season and they restricted them to just five efforts on goal.

Arsenal haven’t been quite as effective on the road having won just two of their last five away games. They left it late against both Luton and Brentford and have generally edged past opponents on the road. Bournemouth are the only side who have been comprehensively beaten by the Gunners on their travels this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side were defeated by Aston Villa and they are yet to beat any side tenth whilst on their travels. Nevertheless, they have looked excellent going forward in recent weeks and have fewer injury issues than their hosts. Jorginho remains sidelined alongside Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira.

The visitors have been impressive going forward, yet their defence has also been incredibly effective too. They’ve conceded just seven away goals so far this season, although it’s now just a single clean sheet in the last five away trips.

Head to Head

These two teams played out a hugely entertaining 2-2 in April with Mo Salah scoring and missing a penalty. Arsenal squandered a two goal lead in this contest and will have been disappointed to have only taken a point from the game.

Arsenal haven’t won at this ground since 2012 when goals from Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski enabled the Gunners to collect all three points in Merseyside.

Liverpool have been victorious in six of the last seven matches between these teams at Anfield. This game often produces memorable moments and there tend to be goals whenever they meet.

Key Betting Stat

  • Five of Arsenal’s eight away games have featured exactly one goal
  • 29% of Arsenal’s goals have been scored in the final ten minutes of matches
  • There have been 9+ corners in seven of Arsenal’s eight away matches
  • Liverpool have been averaging 17.29 shots per game at home so far.
  • Liverpool have scored in both halves in six of their eight home matches
  • 31% of Liverpool goals have been scored after the 81st minute

Match Prediction

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 0-0 draw. Arsenal are yet to prove effective on the road against better sides and they may come out on the wrong side of this result.
